Carbon Offsets
Offsetting is not a solution in itself and we are aware of the risk of it being perceived as such. However, in the short-term we believe it can be part of a carbon management strategy and can provide other benefits like raising awareness, supporting beneficial projects, building capacity, demonstrating that people care enough to pay a de facto voluntary tax on their carbon emissions etc.
Our approach to offsetting is outlined below:
International Travel
We have compiled total carbon emissions from the travel itineraries of all participants. The result is a whopping 69.01 tons of CO2. That’s the equivalant of of 24,149 cheeseburgers or driving to the moon and back in a Toyota Prius! The significance of this figure is not lost on us and we are sharing it here to raise awareness of orders of magnitude of this impact.
Participants are encouraged to offset their travel using trusted schemes. Our suggestion is to use our partner, ClimateCare: http://www.climatecare.org/.
Event Travel
As for the event itself, ClimateCare has agreed to team up with us in assessing the offset of our entire learning journey. During the event we will explore carbon calculation methodologies and reach consensus on how to proceed. ClimateCare will provide us with all the needed information to take care of the event offset.
